Yen Makes Sharp Gains Against Dollar After Hawkish BOJ Comments
The yen has made significant gains against the US dollar, rising to as high as 155.21 per dollar after retracing approximately half of its losses following a rare joint intervention by the US and Japan at the end of July.
The yen had reached a 40-year low of 163.98 per dollar before the intervention, but has now rebounded, with some analysts suggesting that this could be a rate check rather than another intervention to boost its value.
Hawkish comments from Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata on Wednesday suggested that interest rates should be increased nimbly to combat intensifying inflationary pressures, which could support the yen's gains.
Despite some uncertainty surrounding the cause of the yen's surge, most analysts agree that its value remains weak due to the large differential between US and Japanese interest rates.
