Yen Rally Accelerates: USD/JPY Breaks 155, Triggers Stop-Loss Orders
The Japanese yen has broken through a key level, triggering stop-loss orders and a potential path to its highest point this year. The USD/JPY exchange rate surpassed the 155 level, with traders now eyeing the 152 zone as the next target. This significant movement has raised concerns about the unwinding of carry trades, where investors borrow yen at low costs to invest in higher-yielding assets elsewhere.
The yen's appreciation is attributed to a combination of factors, including insufficient market liquidity around the US holiday and speculation about potential adjustments to the asset allocation of Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund. Additionally, expectations for a Bank of Japan rate hike have intensified, leading to a sharp reversal in market sentiment.
Rodrigo Catril, strategist at National Australia Bank, notes that the breakdown below the support zone has opened the door for further declines, with USD/JPY likely to test previous lows near 152.27 and 152.10 levels. Technical indicators also suggest that 152 could be the next target after the breach of support near 155.
The speed of this move has raised concerns about broader unwinding of yen carry trades, which could lead to further appreciation of the yen. Rinto Maruyama, senior interest rate and FX strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities, believes that a reduction in open interest means investors have the opportunity to re-establish short yen positions.
