Yen Rally Sparks Speculation Ahead of Crucial US Jobs Report
The yen has held its gains after a sudden and brief surge in value that left traders suspecting government intervention. The currency was last steady at 158.88 per dollar, having jumped 0.9% overnight.
Market participants are on alert for an official intervention from Tokyo following the rally, which was broad-based with the euro falling roughly 1% against the yen and sterling dropping 1.15%. However, Commonwealth Bank of Australia's Carol Kong said 'the yen rally was about 0.9% and it's not a big move, and I definitely don't think that was an intervention.'
The strength in the yen has put pressure on the dollar ahead of Friday's crucial U.S. jobs report, where analysts are forecasting an increase of 56,000 in jobs following July's shock drop of 23,000.
