Yen Rises Sharply as Traders Bet on Bank of Japan Rate Hike
The Japanese yen has made significant gains against the US dollar, reaching a seven-month high on Tuesday. The rise is attributed to traders unwinding short positions in anticipation of an interest-rate hike by the Bank of Japan.
The yen reached 152.89 per dollar, its strongest position since February. This represents a 4.5% increase from the previous week's rate of around 160 per dollar.
Market analysts point to several factors driving this shift, including expectations of a quicker pace of tightening by the Bank of Japan and potential repatriation of funds by Japanese investors.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama emphasized ongoing communication with the US to ensure orderly currency market movements. The yen's strengthening has significant implications for global markets, particularly in light of upcoming US inflation data and geopolitical tensions in the Gulf.
