Yen Short Unwind Sparks Broader Recovery in FX Positioning
The latest CFTC report reveals significant changes in FX positioning, with a historic Yen short unwind leading to a broader recovery in the currency market. The Japanese Yen saw its largest weekly increase in net positioning since at least 2011, with nearly 118K contracts added as speculators bought around 46K longs and sold almost 72K shorts. This shift lifted JPY positioning from the 2nd to the 63rd historical percentile in just one week.
The Yen's strength led to a collapse of USD/JPY by nearly seven big figures, confirming a broad reversal rather than a narrow covering event. The Euro and British Pound also recovered, although their moves were covered-led, with EUR positioning rising by more than 14.3K contracts as EUR/USD advanced markedly.
Gold recorded the week's second-largest positive positioning move, with net exposure rising by nearly 15.6K contracts, the strongest increase since June. The precious metal posted solid gains in the period, giving the move clear price confirmation rather than leaving it as a purely futures-led adjustment.
