Yen Soars Against Dollar and Euro After Coordinated Intervention
The Japanese yen has seen a significant surge in value against both the US dollar and euro following last week's coordinated intervention by Tokyo and Washington. Markets are now watching for further action, with Japan's Finance Ministry stating that they will not hesitate to take additional measures if needed.
The yen rose 0.51% to reach its strongest level in about three months at 156.80 per dollar on Monday. The Japanese currency also advanced against other currencies such as the euro and sterling, sparking speculation of further intervention by Japanese authorities.
Japan may have spent up to $36.58 billion to buy yen in the latest action aimed at strengthening the currency, bringing the total amount spent on its two FX interventions this year to over $100 billion.
Analysts are divided on the effectiveness of such interventions, with Bank of America's Shusuke Yamada suggesting that they can have a lasting impact and trigger an inflection in market sentiment. However, Juan Perez from Monex USA notes that these operations are expensive and questions their likelihood of happening again.
