Yen Soars Ahead of Central Bank Rate Decisions
The US dollar made small moves on Wednesday as traders focused on the Japanese yen's massive rally ahead of key interest rate decisions from major central banks.
The yen continued to hover at over a seven-month high, boasting a 4% surge in September alone. Its explosive rally since the start of this month took it to as high as 152.89 against the dollar on Tuesday, with Wednesday's trade seeing the pair last down 0.2% to 153.63.
The yen's strength is attributed to a combination of Bank of Japan (BoJ) policy tightening expectations and widespread intervention speculation. Markets are pricing in a near-certainty of a 25 basis point rate hike by the BoJ on September 18, with traders believing Governor Kazuo Ueda could signal additional normalization before year-end.
Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist at LPL Financial, noted that 'the yen’s rally reflects a genuine fundamental and technical shift, with the BoJ moving deeper down the path of policy normalization and trend breaking.' He warned that a break below 152 could accelerate the yen rally and force additional short covering.
