Yen Soars Amid Bank of Japan Rate Hike Speculation
The Japanese yen has seen significant gains against the US dollar amid speculation that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates. The yen rose by over 1.7% on Thursday, reaching its highest level in a month at 155.85.
This move comes as global markets remain jittery following a dramatic government bond sell-off earlier this week. Investors have been reassessing their expectations for the future path of interest rates, both in Japan and across other major economies.
Remarks from Bank of Japan policymaker Hajime Takata, suggesting that the bank needs to move more 'nimbly', have heightened the prospects of a decisive rate hike. The chief executive of deVere, Nigel Green, noted that markets are currently 'jumpy' and can be influenced by rumors.
Citi's analysis also suggests that the remarks reintroduce the idea of an expedited rate hike trajectory. Markets now believe there is a 77% chance of a rate rise at the Bank of Japan's next meeting, which starts on September 17th.
