Yen Soars Amid Bets on BOJ Rate Hike
The Japanese yen gained strength against the US dollar on Friday and is poised for its strongest week in over a month. The currency's gains are driven by bets that the Bank of Japan could raise interest rates at its upcoming meeting, scheduled for September 17-18.
According to analysts, this shift towards hawkish policy is not just speculation, but rather a reassessment of the BOJ's stance on monetary policy normalization. 'This feels less like a short squeeze and more like the market cautiously reassessing a more hawkish BOJ path,' said Masahiko Loo, senior fixed income strategist at State Street Investment Management in Tokyo.
The dollar index was flat at 99.01, while the euro remained steady at $1.1625. The greenback is on track for a 0.7% weekly decline. Meanwhile, nonfarm payrolls data and CPI inflation numbers are upcoming key releases ahead of the FOMC meeting on September 15-16.
Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller's comments earlier this week suggested a more dovish stance, causing traders to pare back bets on a September rate hike. However, geopolitical tensions in the Gulf and their implications for inflation remain a concern, keeping investors vigilant.
