Yen Soars as Carry Trade Exodus Sparks Rate Hike Bets
The yen has surged to a one-month high against the dollar, fueled by a rush to unwind carry trades. This move comes as traders bet on further rate hikes from the Bank of Japan ahead of its September 18 meeting.
Hawkish comments from BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda and board member Hajime Takata have raised the possibility of an outsized rate increase, sending investors scrambling to adjust their positions. The yen has gained over 2% in just two days, nearing levels last seen in May following Ministry of Finance intervention.
The carry trade unwinding has helped push the yen higher against the dollar. This type of trade involves borrowing funds at low interest rates in one currency and investing them in a higher-yielding asset denominated in another currency, often with a higher risk profile.
