Yen Soars as Japan and US Collaborate on Joint Currency Intervention
The Japanese yen has reached its highest level in three months after Washington and Tokyo collaborated on a joint currency intervention. The operation was initiated to support the Japanese currency, which had weakened significantly in recent months.
The yen strengthened to ¥155 to the US dollar on Monday, marking its highest point since early May. This represents an almost 4% increase in value over the past week.
The joint intervention came after the yen hit a 40-year low of nearly ¥164 to the dollar last week. Tokyo's finance ministry confirmed that Japan and the US had conducted coordinated yen-buying intervention, with the goal of propping up the currency.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington 'will not hesitate to participate in further joint intervention,' indicating a willingness to continue supporting the Japanese currency.
