Yen Soars as Traders Bet on BOJ Rate Hike
The Japanese yen surged by nearly 2% against the US dollar on Thursday as traders increased their bets on an interest rate hike from the Bank of Japan. This move comes despite initial speculation that the BOJ had intervened to prop up the currency after a sharp rise in its value on Wednesday.
However, analysis suggests that the yen's strength is actually driven by market expectations of a larger-than-expected rate increase at the upcoming September 17 and 18 meeting. BOJ board member Hajime Takata's hawkish comments also contributed to the yen's surge, as he advocated for more aggressive interest rate hikes to combat inflationary pressures.
Market pricing indicates that there is now a 75% chance of a 25-basis-point rate hike this month, with some traders even speculating about an even larger increase. The Japanese currency has been struggling due to its wide interest rate differentials and fiscal worries.
