The yen has strengthened significantly in Asia on Thursday, following hawkish comments from Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata.

Takata suggested that the BOJ should conduct interest rate hikes more quickly to counter inflationary pressures, rather than adhering to a fixed semiannual pace anticipated by markets.

The yen rose to an intraday peak of 157.95 per dollar in Asia, extending its 0.9% jump overnight, and is now up against the euro and sterling, which have fallen 0.38% and 0.36%, respectively.

Kazumasa Ishii, a strategist at UBS SuMi Trust Wealth Management, stated that there's little incentive for the Japanese government to intervene in the currency market at this moment, citing limited signs of a new multi-decade high in the near term.
