Yen Soars on Hawkish BoJ Bets as US Dollar Slumps
The Japanese Yen (JPY) has continued its upward trend against the US Dollar (USD), reaching near six-month lows. According to financial market experts, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) is likely to continue its monetary tightening path, with a 'hawkish' interest rate hike expected next week.
Analysts at DBS predict that the BoJ will increase interest rates by 25 basis points (bps), accompanied by guidance signaling a flexible pace of future rate hikes. Commerzbank also expects an interest rate hike next week, priced in at around 96%, with further hikes anticipated to follow quickly.
The US Dollar remains under pressure despite strong US Nonfarm Payrolls data for August, which has lifted hawkish Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate expectations. The odds of a Fed rate hike next week are currently 61.2% according to the CME FedWatch tool, although Reuters poll shows that a majority of economists expect rates to remain steady.
The US Producer Price Index (PPI) data for August will be closely watched later in the day, with investors seeking clarity on inflationary pressures and potential rate hike implications.
