Yen Soars Past 153 Per Dollar on BOJ Rate Hike Bets
The Japanese yen has reached its strongest level against the US dollar in over four months, trading at around 153.53 per dollar. This surge is attributed to a combination of factors, including expectations for further rate hikes from the Bank of Japan (BOJ) and the unwinding of yen carry trade positions.
Analysts point out that the break below the 155-yen level triggered additional buying of the yen, creating a self-reinforcing cycle where yen strength begets more yen buying. This has led to a rapid appreciation of the yen, with it gaining around 4% this month alone, the highest among G10 currencies.
The BOJ's monetary policy meeting on September 17-18 is seen as a key variable in determining whether the yen continues its ascent. Market participants expect a rate hike next week, but strategists emphasize that the BOJ needs to deliver a hawkish message and reaffirm market expectations for further hikes before year-end.
