Yen Soars to One-Week High Amid Intervention Speculation
The Japanese Yen has surged to a one-week high against the US Dollar on speculation of intervention. The USD/JPY pair fell nearly 0.9% on Wednesday, with its lowest level since August 24 being around 158.75. This sharp drop during American trading hours raised questions about whether Japanese authorities stepped into the foreign exchange market.
Despite a lack of official confirmation, hawkish expectations from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) supported the Japanese currency. BoJ board member Hajime Takata said that the central bank needs to consider a more nimble approach with rate hikes and different responses to conventional semiannual rate-hike pace.
BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda also hinted at raising interest rates during the September 17-18 meeting, citing growing inflation risks. However, persistent macroeconomic headwinds, including Japan's expansionary fiscal policy, heavy debt burden, and relatively low interest rates, may limit the Yen's upside.
