Yen Soars to Seven-Month High as Markets Anticipate Bank of Japan Rate Hike
Markets are entering a period of heightened volatility as the yen rose to a seven-month high against the US dollar, reaching 152.89 yen per dollar on Tuesday. This sharp currency move has reshaped investor expectations just as Asian markets confront renewed volatility and oil prices edge closer to a politically sensitive threshold.
The yen's strengthening is attributed to investors preparing for another interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan. New economic data supported this expectation, with Japan's economy growing faster than previously estimated in the second quarter of 2026, and real wages posting their strongest growth since 2021.
Asian stock markets reacted to the currency moves, with Japan's Nikkei 225 rising 0.3%, the broad Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan gaining 0.5%, and South Korean stocks adding 2.3%. However, investor confidence was also boosted by an acceleration in Chinese export growth in August compared to the previous month.
