Yen Soars to Seven-Month Highs Amid Oil Price Surge
The Japanese yen has reached seven-month highs as the dollar struggles amidst rising oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East. The yen's rally has been fueled by expectations of faster Bank of Japan tightening, repatriation of overseas funds, and pressure from Washington for a stronger currency. The BOJ is widely expected to raise rates by 25 basis points at its September 17-18 meeting.
The dollar index neared its lowest in almost two weeks, with the U.S. currency down 0.4% against the yen on Wednesday. The euro rose 0.18% to $1.1641, nearing a two-week high ahead of a widely expected rate rise from the European Central Bank on Thursday.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged traders not to bet against the yen, following historic joint U.S.-Japanese intervention in late July to boost the currency and deter Tokyo from selling U.S. Treasuries. The rally will hinge on whether BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda follows through with hawkish comments.
