Yen Stabilizes Before BoJ Decision Amid Hawkish Hold Speculation
The Japanese Yen (JPY) has been underperforming most G10 currencies against the US Dollar (USD), but is slightly firmer in recent trading. The USD/JPY rate has hit multi-decade lows, last seen in 1986, with limited resistance overhead.
Markets currently price little Bank of Japan (BoJ) tightening for July and September, but a hawkish hold next week could surprise and trigger Yen strength after recent Ministry of Finance (MoF) intervention warnings. The MoF has been speaking of 'bold action' to support the currency, but so far there has been no meaningful reaction in the market.
Fundamental risk lies with the BoJ's upcoming decision next week, where policymakers have hinted at a faster than expected tightening path. Markets are currently pricing little for the July 31 meeting and only 10 basis points for September 18, leaving room for a surprise that could deliver important yen strength.
