Yen Stages Violent Rebound as US Stocks Surge
The Japanese yen experienced a sharp rebound on Thursday, climbing over 2% against the US dollar to reclaim the 155 level. This dramatic rally has sparked speculation that Japanese officials may have intervened in currency markets again.
Fawad Razaqzada, an analyst at Forex.com, noted that expectations of a pivot toward hawkish rate hikes by the Bank of Japan also contributed to the yen's surge. The Bank of Japan is set to discuss rate hikes at its September meeting, with a focus on whether energy-driven price pressures threaten medium-term price stability.
The interest rate differential between the US and Japan has long driven capital out of the yen, but investors are now rotating back into higher-yielding dollar assets. This shift in sentiment was triggered by Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller's hint that the Fed may pause rate adjustments at its September meeting.
