Yen Strength Cues Market Speculation and Dollar Weakness
The yen has maintained its gains on Thursday following a brief surge in the previous session that left market participants wondering if government authorities were behind it. The sudden move saw the yen jump 0.9% overnight, with the euro and sterling dropping by around 1% each against the yen.
Currency strategist Carol Kong from Commonwealth Bank of Australia downplayed the rally, saying 'The yen rally was about 0.9% and it's not a big move... But some market participants have speculated that the rally was caused by a rate check.'
The strength in the yen has put pressure on the U.S. dollar ahead of Friday's crucial nonfarm payrolls report, where analysts are forecasting an increase of 56,000 jobs following July's shock drop of 23,000.
