Yen Strength Gains Momentum Amid Hawkish Signals
The Japanese yen has strengthened by around 6% against the dollar since officials stepped into currency markets in late July, according to LSEG data. This swing has been sharp enough that traders have flipped to a net long stance in the week ending September 8, with net longs nearing 10,800 contracts compared to about 92,200 shorts the prior week.
Hawkish signals from Bank of Japan board members have added fuel to the rally. They suggest faster rate increases are possible, unlike joint U.S. and Japan action in the past. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also warned against betting on yen weakness, declaring 'I am the house now.'
For carry traders who borrow in cheaper currencies and invest in higher-yielding ones, a stronger yen is not ideal.
