Yen Strength Signals Global Carry Trade Unwind Risk
The Japanese bond market is flashing warning signs for global markets, and they're showing up first in USD/JPY. A strengthening yen and rising Japanese government bond (JGB) yields are reversing conditions that once supported global carry trades.
These trades relied on the yen to fund positions in higher-yielding assets abroad. If USD/JPY continues to fall while JGB yields climb, the economics behind these trades will weaken, increasing the risk of a broader unwind.
The yen has strengthened to around ¥154 per dollar, gaining roughly 4% in recent sessions. A stronger yen raises the cost of repaying yen-funded positions, while falling USD/JPY reduces the profitability of carry trades.
A sustained rise in JGB yields alongside a stronger yen would make Japanese assets highly competitive with overseas holdings, potentially encouraging institutional investors to repatriate capital and reinforce yen strength.
