Yen Strengthens Against Dollar as Rate Spreads Narrow
The Japanese yen has been gaining strength against the US dollar due to changes in monetary policy expectations between the two economies. According to BBH analysts, the rate spread outlook currently favors the JPY against the USD, driven by evolving central bank policies.
The key factor is the narrowing gap between US and Japanese bond yields. As of mid-2025, 10-year US Treasury yields have stabilized around 4.2%, while Japanese government bond yields have inched higher, reflecting adjustments to the Bank of Japan's yield curve control policy.
The BoJ has taken cautious steps towards policy normalization, including adjustments to its yield curve control framework and a reduction in asset purchases. Market participants are pricing in a possible rate hike by the end of the year, which would further compress rate spreads and strengthen the yen.
