Yen Strengthens to Six-Month High, Puts Japanese Carmakers on Notice
Japanese carmakers are bracing for a potential profit hit due to the strengthening yen. The currency has reached its highest level in more than six months, trading around ¥153 against the dollar on Tuesday. This is squeezing many of Japan's export-focused automakers, which have partly based their earnings forecasts on weaker yen assumptions.
Toyota Motor Corp. and other Japanese carmakers are at risk of taking a hit to their bottom lines. The stronger yen makes their exports more expensive for foreign buyers, potentially leading to lower sales and revenue.
The yen's strength is the highest since February, when it traded around ¥153 against the dollar. This has caught many analysts off guard, as they had expected the yen to remain weak due to Japan's economic struggles.
