Yen Surges 2% Amid Speculation of Fresh Intervention
The yen surged by 2% against the US dollar on July 30, marking its largest intraday gain since Japan intervened in the market earlier this year. The currency jumped as much as 2.6% to 159.21 against the dollar at 10:05 am New York time, sparking speculation that officials may be propping up the yen once again.
The move comes despite a record 11.73 trillion yen intervention by Japanese authorities from April 28 to May 27 to support the yen after it slid past 160 per dollar. Finance ministry reserve data suggests Japan likely drew on its holdings of foreign securities, including US Treasuries, to finance the recent intervention.
Analysts say the move in USD/JPY is showing classic signs of intervention. 'The timing would be smart,' said Win Thin, chief economist at Bank of Nassau 1982. 'Going with the market instead of against it.'
