Yen Surges After Record Intervention

The Japanese yen has seen significant gains after a record intervention by the Japanese Ministry of Finance and the US Department of the Treasury. The USDJPY pair has returned to growth, recovering losses incurred over the last five months since the outbreak of the war in Iran.

The yen's strength is attributed to the carry trade, or trading on interest rate differentials, which continues to exert pressure on the Japanese currency. Despite a nearly 90 billion dollar intervention, the interest rate differential between Japan and the US remains significant, with market valuations suggesting it will narrow slightly in the coming months.

Investors are awaiting a decision from the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates, which could serve as a significant declaration for the market. The current market expectations suggest a 60% chance of a rate hike by the Bank of Japan on September 18.
