Yen Surges Against Dollar Amid BOJ Rate Hike Speculation
The Japanese yen surged against the US dollar in New York trading, reaching a low of 155.47 per dollar and rising by approximately 2.08%.
The catalyst for this sudden increase was speculation over an accelerated rate hike pace by the Bank of Japan (BOJ), with BOJ board member Hajime Takata stating that consecutive rate hikes could be possible, not necessarily set in stone.
This hawkish comment from the BOJ, combined with a speech by Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasizing the importance of thorough policy discussion at every meeting, contributed to market expectations for rate hikes and fueled yen buying.
The dollar weakness was further reinforced by comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller, who expressed caution about raising rates this month if upcoming economic data confirms easing inflationary pressures.
