Yen Surges Against Dollar Amid Ongoing Inflation Concerns
The Japanese yen experienced a significant surge against the US dollar on Wednesday, reaching its highest point since July's joint intervention by the two countries. The yen had earlier dropped to a 40-year low of 163.98 per dollar before recovering some of its losses. It was not immediately clear what prompted this latest move.
Chris Scicluna, head of economic research at Daiwa Capital Markets Europe, speculated that it may be 'a convenient time for the U.S. or Japan to conduct a rate check' following hawkish comments from BOJ board member Hajime Takata and Governor Kazuo Ueda on Tuesday. Ueda signaled a strong chance of a hike this month.
Analysts were divided on whether Wednesday's yen rally was an official intervention, with some suggesting it may be 'a rate check' rather than a full-scale intervention to shift the trend. The size of the move was relatively limited, they noted.
