Yen Surges Against Dollar Amid Rate Check Speculation
The Japanese yen has experienced a sharp increase against the US dollar after retracing half of its gains following a joint intervention by the US and Japan in late July. The yen rose as high as 155.21 per dollar before surrendering some of its gains, and it was last up 0.79% at 158.92 per dollar.
Chris Scicluna, head of economic research at Daiwa Capital Markets Europe, attributed the move to a potential rate check by the US or Japan, following hawkish comments from BOJ board member Hajime Takata and Governor Kazuo Ueda on Tuesday. The Treasury Department also reported that US Secretary Scott Bessent voiced strong support for 'decisive' monetary steps to combat yen weakness in a meeting with Ueda.
Analysts were divided on whether the move was due to intervention or a rate check, with some suggesting it might be an official move given market thinness during the week. However, others pointed out that the magnitude of the move did not suggest direct market intervention.
