Yen Surges Against Dollar as Hawkish Comments Spark Rate Hike Fears

The Japanese yen made a significant gain against the US dollar on Wednesday, rising by 0.92% to reach 158.72 per dollar.

This move comes after the yen had retraced about half of its gains from a rare joint intervention by the US and Japan at the end of July.

The Bank of Japan's hawkish comments this morning, particularly those of BOJ board member Hajime Takata, who suggested that interest rate hikes should be conducted nimbly to counter inflationary pressures, may have contributed to the yen's gain.

BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda also signalled a strong chance of a hike this month, and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent voiced support for 'decisive' monetary steps to combat yen weakness in a meeting with Ueda on Tuesday.
