Yen Surges Against Dollar Following Coordinated Intervention
The yen has strengthened significantly against the dollar and euro in recent days following intervention by Japan and the US. On Monday, Tokyo and Washington announced that they had coordinated a yen-buying operation to support Japan's currency.
According to central bank data, Japan may have spent as much as $36.58 billion on this latest action, bringing its total expenditure on foreign exchange interventions this year to over $100 billion.
Analysts believe that the US Treasury's involvement in the intervention is a significant development, with some speculating that it could be the first step towards broader dollar weakness.
However, others have cautioned that the impact of foreign exchange intervention can be short-lived and may not necessarily lead to long-term changes in currency markets. 'The view that FX intervention cannot have a lasting impact and merely alters short-term market flows seems right in many cases,' said Shusuke Yamada, a Bank of America analyst.
The dollar index, which measures the US currency against a basket of major peers, edged higher on Monday after recent losses, but remained under pressure due to concerns over geopolitical tensions and the impact of foreign exchange intervention.
