Yen Surges Amid Bessent Warning on Interest Rate Hike
The Japanese yen has been on an upward trend, reaching almost its strongest level in nearly seven months. On Wednesday, it appreciated towards 153 per dollar. This comes after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned traders against betting against the currency.
Bessent, a former hedge fund manager, claimed to have 'pretty good insight' on what the Bank of Japan will do when intervening with the yen. The BOJ is widely expected to raise interest rates next week, while the Takaichi administration has adopted a more hawkish stance in response to excessive yen weakness.
The reversal of bearish forces that drove the yen to a 40-year low in July is also contributing to its appreciation. This includes an unwinding of carry trades and expectations of increased capital repatriation.
