Yen Surges Amid BOJ Rate Hike Expectations
The Japanese yen experienced a significant surge in value against the US dollar on Thursday in New York trading, rising more than 3 yen compared to the previous day. This movement is largely attributed to market expectations that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will raise interest rates in mid-September.
Kyodo News reported that the strengthening of the yen occurred as speculation grew about a narrowing interest rate gap between Japan and the United States. The interest rate gap refers to the difference in interest rates between the two countries, and market participants are buying the yen due to expectations that this gap will soon narrow.
The US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's call for a review of loose monetary policy at a recent G20 meeting has also contributed to the strengthening of the yen. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda has expressed readiness to raise interest rates, taking into account economic conditions and price movements.
