Yen Surges Amid Intervention Fears
The Japanese yen has surged against the US dollar, sparking concerns about potential intervention by authorities.
The currency rallied as much as 1.2% to 158.22 per dollar on Wednesday, prompting traders to become hyper-vigilant for signs of intervention.
Bank of America's foreign-exchange strategist Alex Cohen noted that the market remains 'on high intervention alert', while a trader at Monex Inc., Andrew Hazlett, expressed skepticism about the move, suggesting it could not be explained otherwise.
The yen has been under pressure due to Japan's wide interest-rate gap with other major economies and concerns over the country's fiscal outlook following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's aggressive spending plans.
