Yen Surges as BoJ Rate Hike and Bessent's Warning Fuel Strength
The yen has strengthened significantly in recent weeks, rising from its lowest point in July to a seven-month high in September. This move is one of the largest currency shifts of 2026 and happened faster than most anticipated.
The Bank of Japan's decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points to 1.25% on September 18 has already been fully priced in, with markets assigning a high probability to a follow-up increase in December. The hike is expected to drive the yen higher, but the risk is asymmetric if the BoJ doesn't deliver.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's warning against betting on a weaker yen also contributed to the currency's strength, with the yen trading at 153 per dollar after his comment.
