Yen Surges as BOJ Rate-Hike Bets Intensify
The Japanese yen surged to its strongest level since August 3 against the US dollar on Thursday, reaching ¥156.15, as traders increased bets on further Bank of Japan interest-rate hikes and weighed the possibility of Tokyo intervention.
Traders are now pricing in a higher likelihood of another BOJ rate increase at the central bank's September 18 policy meeting. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda left the door open to higher rates in comments on Tuesday, while board member Hajime Takata suggested policymakers could move faster or make larger adjustments than previously seen.
Atsushi Mimura, Japan's vice finance minister for international affairs, said authorities were 'neither satisfied nor reassured' by recent currency moves and remained 'on a state of heightened alert.' This statement bolstered the perception that Tokyo is closely monitoring the yen and could respond if movements become excessively rapid or disorderly.
