Yen Surges as BOJ Tightening Expectations Accelerate

The Japanese yen strengthened on Thursday as traders became increasingly confident that the Bank of Japan would raise interest rates more aggressively than initially thought.

According to Reuters, markets are now close to fully pricing a BOJ hike this month, with expectations building for a faster pace of tightening. The yen climbed as far as 157.545 per dollar in Asian trading, its strongest level in nearly a month, after gaining about 0.9% overnight.

The shift in expectations followed comments from BOJ board member Hajime Takata, who argued that rate increases should be carried out flexibly as inflation pressures intensify rather than according to a predictable schedule.

BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda also indicated that interest rates could be discussed at every upcoming meeting. This has strengthened the possibility that tightening could proceed faster than investors had expected only weeks ago.
