Yen Surges as Dollar Hovers Ahead of US Employment Data
The US dollar has been relatively stable ahead of the highly anticipated employment data release. Economists are cautious in their forecasts, citing seasonal factors and distortions caused by local governments and the beginning of the new school year.
However, a surprise loss of jobs after July's decline could significantly impact expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike later this month. Fed funds futures have already trimmed the odds of a hike this week.
In contrast, the Japanese yen has seen a two-day surge, with few attributing it to intervention. Most accounts attribute the yen's gains to hawkish comments from the Bank of Japan and speculation about faster BOJ tightening, as well as some adjustment by large pools of capital.
