Yen Surges as Japan's Central Bank Pumps Up Rate Hike Expectations
The Japanese yen has made a sharp recovery on Thursday, rising almost 1.5% against the US dollar to its strongest point in a month.
This sudden gain is attributed to increasing bets that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates, rather than intervention by Japanese authorities.
Hajime Takata, a BOJ board member, commented on Wednesday that the central bank should conduct rate hikes nimbly to counter inflationary pressures, rather than adhering to a fixed semiannual pace.
This hawkish tone from the BOJ has reintroduced the idea of an expedited rate hike trajectory, according to Citi, and is being taken more seriously by markets.
