Yen Surges as Markets Raise Bets on Bank of Japan Rate Hikes
The yen surged on Thursday after a sudden burst higher in the previous session, reaching its strongest level in a month. The dollar dropped 1.5% to 156.17 yen, with the Japanese currency's rally being broad-based and not attributed to intervention by Japanese authorities.
Market analysts pointed instead to rising bets on Bank of Japan rate hikes, following hawkish comments from board member Hajime Takata. He suggested that the central bank should conduct interest rate hikes more nimbly to counter intensifying inflationary pressures.
Citi noted that Takata's comments were the strongest messaging from the board and reintroduced the idea of an expedited rate hike trajectory, which markets are taking seriously. A Bank of Japan rate hike this month is nearly fully priced in by markets.
