Yen Surges as Rate Check Speculation Mounts Amid BOJ Hawkish Comments
The Japanese yen experienced a significant surge against the US dollar on Wednesday, after having partially retraced its gains from a rare joint intervention by the US and Japan in late July. The yen had reached a 40-year low of 163.98 per dollar before the intervention, but rose to as high as 155.21 afterwards.
The yen's recent move has sparked interest among market analysts, who are speculating that it may be a rate check rather than another intervention attempt to shift the trend.
According to Chris Scicluna, head of economic research at Daiwa Capital Markets, 'It's a big chunky move and it would be a convenient time for the U.S. or Japan to at least conduct a rate check.'
The recent comments from BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda and hawkish BOJ board member Hajime Takata have also contributed to the yen's strength, as they signaled a strong chance of a hike this month.
