Yen Surges as US-Iran Tensions Ease
The Japanese Yen has strengthened against the US Dollar as tensions between the United States and Iran ease. This easing of geopolitical tensions, combined with weaker-than-expected US economic data and caution ahead of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision on Wednesday and the Bank of Japan's meeting on Friday, is putting pressure on the US Dollar.
USD/JPY traded around 163.70 at the time of writing, down 0.09% on the day. The decline in tensions between Washington and Tehran has improved market mood, with investors focusing on this week's monetary policy decisions from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. Both central banks are expected to leave interest rates unchanged.
Analysts at MUFG note that the BoJ is under pressure to shift its guidance towards a faster pace of rate hikes, as yen weakness increases upside inflation risks. Strategists at BNY argue that the BoJ needs to signal some tightening in financial conditions to manage balance-of-payments risks and fiscal impulse.
