Yen Surges as US Jobs Data Raises Doubts About Fed Rate Hikes

The Japanese yen surged to its highest level in months against the US dollar after weaker-than-expected US employment figures raised doubts about the Federal Reserve's ability to proceed with further interest rate hikes.

The release of the US jobs report, which showed a significant miss on non-farm payrolls and an uptick in unemployment, prompted traders to reduce their bets on a Fed rate hike at the next policy meeting. This led to a broad sell-off in the US dollar, causing the dollar to fall to 155 yen.

The yen's strength can be attributed to its recent divergence from the Bank of Japan's ultra-loose monetary policy and the Fed's tightening cycle. With the 10-year Treasury yield dropping to 2.4%, the yield differential between the two countries has narrowed, making the dollar less attractive to investors.

The implications for the Federal Reserve are clear: a softening labor market could give policymakers reason to pause or even end their hiking cycle. The probability of a rate hike at the next FOMC meeting has fallen to 60%, down from 70% just last week, according to CME FedWatch.
