Yen Surges on Hawkish BoJ Rhetoric and Weakening Dollar
The Japanese Yen has experienced a sharp rebound in recent days, with the USD/JPY pair dropping from 160 to around 155.30 as the Dollar broadly weakened and Asian FX gained.
According to MUFG's Michael Wan, the moves in USD/JPY were not entirely clear, but it is unlikely that they were driven by Bank of Japan intervention.
The BoJ's current account data for Wednesday suggests no intervention occurred. However, BoJ Board Member Takata's hawkish rhetoric has left the door open for an outsized interest rate increase and back-to-back hikes in September.
This has led to increased expectations of a 25bps hike at the BoJ's next meeting, which is expected to weaken the Dollar over time.
