Yen Surges Past 160, Fueling Speculation of Intervention
The Japanese yen surged past the 160 mark against the US dollar in the foreign exchange market on June 30, sparking speculation of a currency intervention by Japan's government and the Bank of Japan.
This sudden appreciation was brief but significant, with the yen touching 160.20 before recovering from levels near 163. The rapid rise has led market participants to believe that intermittent intervention by the government and the BOJ may have been conducted.
The last time Japan intervened in the currency market was two months ago, in May, when the Ministry of Finance undertook a large-scale yen-buying operation worth ¥11.73 trillion (approximately $73.7 billion). However, this intervention had limited effects and did not halt the yen's depreciation trend.
Market participants are now questioning whether this recent surge is a one-off move or part of a strategy to defend the psychological threshold of 160.
