Yen Surges Past Four-Month Low Amid Hawkish BoJ Comments
The USD/JPY pair traded flat at around 156.00 on Monday but is close to its four-month low of 155.23, reflecting the Japanese Yen's recent outperformance.
Analysts at MUFG attribute this move to hawkish commentary from Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata, who left open the possibility for an outsized interest rate increase and back-to-back hikes.
Takata's remarks reinforced market speculation that the BoJ could adopt a more aggressive tightening path if conditions warrant. Meanwhile, weak US Dollar is also seen as a trigger for significant weakness in USD/JPY.
MUFG ruled out the possibility of BoJ intervention in the recent Yen surge, pointing instead to broader Dollar weakness and regional FX gains as key drivers.
