Yen Surges Past JPY158 Amid Speculation of Intervention
The Japanese yen strengthened against the US dollar in Tokyo on July 30, reaching as high as JPY158 before trading back down to JPY163.73-74 by 5pm local time.
This sudden appreciation surprised currency markets and raised speculation that Japanese authorities had intervened to support the currency.
The move came after a day of Federal Reserve inaction, with interest rates remaining unchanged, and hours before the Bank of Japan's monetary policy meeting.
Market participants struggled to explain the sharp yen appreciation, but some suggested the Japanese government may have seen an opportunity to intervene during dollar selling that followed the Federal Reserve's decision.
