Yen Surges Past Seven-Month Peak on Rate Hike Speculation
The Japanese yen has reached its highest point in seven months, trading at 152 yen per dollar on Tuesday. This surge comes as investors react to speculation about a possible Bank of Japan interest rate hike.
The dollar dropped to 153.79 yen by 5:00 p.m., down from 155.54 yen on Monday. The euro also lost ground, falling to 1.16 against the dollar and 178.59 against the yen.
Analysts attribute the market's turbulence to foreign speculators rushing to close short yen positions after recent remarks from Japanese and U.S. officials.
FUJISHIRO Koichi, an economist at Daiichi Life Asset Management, said that the yen's appreciation is due to stabilized expectations for U.S. interest rates and increased anticipation of a Bank of Japan rate hike.
