Yen Surges to 7-Month High on Expectations of Faster BOJ Rate Hikes
The Japanese yen surged to its highest level in about seven months against the US dollar on Monday morning, reaching the low-153 range. This brief strengthening was driven by expectations that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will raise interest rates at a faster pace than previously anticipated.
Market participants now see the possibility of the yen rising to the 150 level as the narrowing of domestic and overseas interest rate differentials gains momentum. The BOJ's potential policy shift has fueled active trading, with investors unwinding accumulated yen-short, dollar-long positions.
Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama cautioned against speculative moves in a press conference following a Cabinet meeting on Monday, stating that the government will work to maintain orderly foreign exchange markets in coordination with the US Treasury Department.
